March is literally round the corner which is the month of the great awakening in your garden. The sap is starting to rise and while it’s still chilly in the shade, the sun is starting to add warmth to the earth. This is the perfect window to work in the garden before the spring rush.

1. Clean out your greenhouse to give your indoors seedlings space to grow
2. Fix any waterbutts and water carriers to catch the spring rain.
3. Prune group 3 clematis (right down to 30cm) and group 2 (prune lightly)
4. Prune apples and pears but leave “stone” fruits
5. Turn your compost heap
6. Sow broad beans and peas under a cloche or cold frame
7. Divide snowdrops now they are going over
8. Mulch your borders with compost or well rotted manure

After 25 years of renting, we have had to be clever in the way we garden. we’ve learned that virtually anything can be grown in a pot, planter box, or even a repurposed container, offering renters total flexibility in their gardens.

Living in a rental property is an opportunity to be an innovative gardener. Embrace the challenge, enjoy the portability, and start creating your own little patch of paradise, no matter how temporary your address may be!

1. Make sure to read your tenancy agreement carefully. Most landlords are perfectly fine with container gardening, but major structural changes, like digging up established flower beds or installing permanent features, are usually off-limits without written permission.

2. Plant as much as you can in pots. The best part? When you move, your garden comes with you! No need to leave your hard work behind.

3. Hard work is key. If you have a long term contract, take a year to know what’s in the garden. Then get ready to work around what you already have.

4. Propagate anything you can from garden to garden.

5. Only fill your borders with things you propagated or have been given. Then when you come to move, you don’t have financial attachment, which makes it a tiny bit easier.

Whether you’re eyeing a packet of heirloom tomatoes or a field’s worth of wildflowers, starting from seed is one of the most rewarding parts of gardening. But before you get your hands dirty, here are five essential tips to ensure your garden (and community) thrives.
1. Check the “Sow By” Date
Seeds are living things, and their viability drops over time. Always check the back of the packet for the sow date. While some seeds can last years, others lose their “oomph” quickly.
2. Don’t Plant Them All at Once
It’s tempting to sow the whole packet, but resist the urge! If we have a late frost or a hungry slug takes out your first batch, you’ll be glad you kept some backups in the packet.
3. Donate Excess Seeds to Schools
Did you end up with too many seeds in your packet? Many local schools and youth clubs run gardening programs on shoe string budgets. Donating your unopened or partially used packets is a fantastic way to help kids learn where their food comes from.
4. Use Your Local Seed Swap
Gardening can get expensive, but it doesn’t have to. Check libraries, community centers, or Facebook groups for Seed Swaps. It’s a great way to trade your extras for a variety you’ve been wanting to try, completely for free.
5. Sow and Gift Your Extras
If you’ve already started the seeds and realize you have too many seedling’s for your garden, don’t throw them! Pot them up and gift them to neighbors or friends. A healthy, homegrown seedling makes a great gift.

We’re always told that we must leave our gardens messy in the autumn to save the bugs, and, I’m all for supporting the ecosystem, but seeing these guys thriving on a piece of pressure-treated wood makes me wonder.

Every autumn, the “don’t cut back” pressure is real. But maybe nature is a bit more resilient than we give it credit for?

Transforming your garden into a local wildlife hotspot is about creating a tiny, functional ecosystem. If you build it, they will definitely come! Here is how to make your garden the most popular destination in the neighborhood:

1. Plant Native Plants: Native plants provide specific nectar, pollen, and seeds local insects and birds like to eat.
Aim for a mix of early bloomers and late berry producers so the “restaurant” never closes.
Supplement with high-quality seeds or suet in feeders, but keep them clean to prevent spreading disease.
2. Add Some Water: Build a small pond, or even bury a bucket with sloped sides so creatures can climb out if they fall in.
A shallow birdbath or even a heavy ceramic saucer with some stones in it will give bees a landing pad. Change the water regularly with rainwater to keep it safe and mosquito-free.
3. Embrace Natures Mess:
A pile of old wood in a shady corner is a five star hotel for beetles, frogs, and fungi.
Leaf litter provides vital insulation for overwintering pollinators. If you can, leave a small patch of grass unmown to provide cover for small mammals and insects. Don’t cut back your perennials in Autumn, leave them for bugs to hide.
4. Provide A Loving Home: Dense shrubs offer better protection and nesting sites, than a wooden fence. Install birdhouses or “bee hotels” for solitary bees. Ensure there’s a small gap under your fence so hedgehogs can pass through safely. 5. Avoid using pesticides or herbicides: They don’t just kill “pests” they remove the food source for the birds and beneficial insects you’re trying to attract! #gardening #wildlife #nature

They provide a much needed pop of color when the rest of your garden looks dead.

Once established, hellebores are so easy to look after, they just want to be left alone in a nice, shady spot.

On those unexpectedly warm days in February, they provide honeybees and bumblebees with what they need.

While you can plant them in spring, autumn is the best time for two reasons:
The soil is still warm from summer, but the air is cooling. This allows the plant to focus all its energy on building a robust root system before the ground freezes.

Hairy Bittercress Tincture Recipe

A great Spring Tonic. Full of antioxidants, vitamin, Iron and calcium. Helps to stimulate sluggish digestion, boosts immunity and fights off carcinogens.

After 2 weeks pour the tincture through a muslin, store the liquid in a sterilised glass jar, in a cool dark cupboard. Take 1 tsp a day in a glass of water or squash.

Bittercress is also great raw in salads or as a tea infusion

Spring has a way of arriving all at once, and if you aren’t ready, the garden will quickly outpace you. Think of these five tasks as your guide to ensure everything runs smoothly once the sun starts actually shining.

1. Mulch Borders
This is your best defense against the “Big Weed Awakening.” Applying a thick layer of organic matter now smothers weed seeds before they germinate. It also locks in winter moisture and improves soil structure before the ground dries out in late spring.
2. Repair and Clean Waterbutt
Spring showers are only useful if you can catch them. Algae and debris build up over winter, which can lead to disease when you water delicate seedlings later.
Ensure seals are watertight and the tank is sterile so you have a bank of pH-neutral water ready for the summer dry spells.
3. Pot On Autumn Cuttings
By now, those cuttings have likely exhausted the nutrients in their starter compost and their roots are hitting the sides of the pot.
Moving them into slightly larger pots with fresh compost gives them the “fuel injection” they need to put on a growth spurt the moment temperatures rise.
4. Cut Back Hellebore Leaves
Old foliage often carries Hellebore Leaf Spot (dark black blotches). Removing the tatty old leaves prevents the fungus from spreading to the new growth.
It also clears the stage so you can actually see the nodding flowers, which would otherwise be hidden under a canopy of leathery, dead leaves.
5. Sow Chilli and Pepper Seeds
Chillies and peppers have a notoriously long germination and growth time. They need a long growing season to produce heat and ripen their fruit.
Sowing them now (with a heat mat) ensures they are sturdy plants by May. If you wait until spring officially hits, you’ll likely end up with a harvest of green peppers that never quite turn red before the first autumn frost. #gardeningjobs #gardening #spring

Growing mistletoe is our “mad scientist” gardening project this year. We have been dying to give it a go, but will need a lot of patience 🤣 Here’s how we did it:

1. Choose the Right Host
Mistletoe is picky about its “landlord.” Most varieties prefer deciduous trees with relatively soft bark like Apple trees.

2. Source Fresh Berries
Timing is everything. You need fresh, wild ripe white berries, available now until the end of March•

3. The “Planting” Process
Choose a high, clean, sunny branch that is at least the thickness of a finger (about 2–5cm). Pop the berry so the sticky seed sticks onto the underside or side of the branch. The glue will harden, anchoring it against wind and rain. Survival rates are low. “Plant” at least 20 seeds (we only had 11🥴) to ensure at least one or two take hold.

4. The Long Wait
• Year 1: The seed germinates and sends out a tiny green “sinker” (hypocotyl) that probes the bark. You won’t see much growth.
• Year 2: The plant begins to tap into the tree’s water supply. You might see a tiny green leaf.
• Year 5+: This is when you finally get a recognizable, bushy clump ready for harvesting.

⚠️ Remember… Mistletoe berries and leaves are toxic to humans and pets. Always wear gloves when handling them and keep them out of reach of children.

A bit about me…

I started my gardening journey with my mum when I was about 4 years old. We had an allotment plot but she also grew sweet peas. I will never forget the scent and to this day they are my favourite smelling flowers.

We got chickens when I was a teenager. Another thing that I loved from my childhood, and wanted to have myself when space permitted.

At 21 instead of going out clubbing, I bought a greenhouse where I learned to propagate plants. Something that still fascinates me now and I love doing.

After covid paused my photography business, I decided to start my own gardening business. It’s probably something I should have done years ago!

Country cottage borders has now been going 4 years. I don’t have an RHS qualification, it’s something I never got round to doing. But I have nearly 50 years of gardening experience.

Next month I’ve been asked to do my first talk. My imposter syndrome is real… but I also can’t wait to share my gardening experiences with others!

What we often call garden weeds are actually some of nature’s most potent healers. Before you reach for the fork, check out the incredible benefits of these five common backyard visitors:

· Dandelion: The ultimate detoxer. Every part is edible! The roots support liver health, while the leaves act as a gentle, nutrient-dense diuretic to help flush out toxins.
· Nettle: Nature’s multivitamin. Don’t mind the sting—once dried or cooked, nettles are a powerhouse of iron, magnesium, and calcium. Great for an energy boost and seasonal allergy relief!
· Yarrow: The “master of blood.” Named after Achilles, this feathery herb is famous for its ability to help stop bleeding and move stagnant circulation. It’s a wonderful fever-breaker, too.
· Willow Herb: A hidden gem for hormones. Often found in wilder corners of the garden, it’s traditionally used to support prostate health and soothe the digestive tract.
· Dock: The perfect partner. Usually found growing right next to nettles, its crushed leaves provide instant cooling relief for stings and rashes. It’s also a traditional tonic for supporting skin health from the inside out.
